Richard Dawkins On Aborting Down Syndrome Babies
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and there are events and celebrations across this country and others to celebrate the blessings of Down Syndrome children.
Unfortunately, there always seems to be an evil troll in the midst of all the love expressed for these children. That troll is in the form of an avowed atheist, biologist, writer, and Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins. It seems Dawkins believes quite differently.
According to Dawkins, a woman pregnant with a Down Syndrome baby should abort it and try again. He said bringing it into the world would be immoral if you had the choice. After making these remarks on Twitter, Dawkins was barraged with tweets countering his beliefs and objecting to his attitude. Down Syndrome Ireland called his comments appalling.
Not one to apologize for his anti-life beliefs there would be no apology for his remarks. Instead, he reiterated his stand: Given a free choice of having an early abortion or deliberately bringing a Down child into the world, I think the moral and sensible choice would be to abort.
Fortunately, as crowds of supporters appear nationwide this month at rallies, walks, and other events, we can take heart that Mr. Dawkins does not speak for all.
