Liam and Daniel were sitting by a campfire on the beach one night when they saw two figures running toward them.

A family of eight had decided to walk along a four-mile stretch of coast without realizing that the tide was coming in. The mother and five children were trapped for some time before the other two members of the group realized they were in trouble. When darkness set in they ran for help.

Liam and Daniel quickly called 911 and ran over the slippery cliffs toward the stranded family with a small lantern. Having found their location, they were able to direct the rescuers to the family quickly before the tide rose higher.

Liam and Daniel were later given awards for their bravery. Inspector Samuel commented:

To set out in the dark to help the stricken family was a particularly brave act?You have played your actions down, but I am in no shadow of doubt that this was an extremely daring and courageous thing to do.

When Ryan was 12 years old he heard about a 4-month-old girl in his hometown who needed a liver transplant. He decided to help in the fundraising for her operation with a cross-country trip. But he wasn't biking or skating - he was driving a lawnmower!

With the support of his family, Ryan went from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Washington, DC, raised $15,000 for the little girl's surgery, and greatly increased awareness of the need for organ donors with the publicity it generated.

Realizing the impact which just one person could make, when Ryan was 14, he decided to promote organ donations in an even bigger way. In order to generate organ donation publicity in every state, Ryan set on a 19,000-mile trek to mow the lawns of every state capitol in all 50 states.

As he moved across the nation, the media turned out for him. As the Governor of Nebraska commented, "His efforts are certain to increase awareness of the need for organ and tissue donors. Hopefully, those individuals waiting for the life-saving gift of organ and tissue donation will come closer to their goals too."

Upon his successful return to his hometown, Ryan was greeted by family and friends with a banner stating, "Ryan, you mowed us over!!"

17-year-old Katie was driving home from spending the night with a friend, still in her pajamas with her pillow in the backseat. Suddenly she saw a four-wheeler overturned in the deserted country road just ahead of her. As she slowed down and got closer she realized that there was an arm and foot protruding from under the machine.

Katie jammed on the brakes, grabbed her cell phone and ran toward the injured man, calling 911 as she did. Then she turned her attention to the stricken man. There was blood everywhere, but she said later, "I couldn't believe it, but I was insanely calm. I don't know if it was adrenaline or what, but I was able to lift the machine off the man."

Katie plans to pursue a medical-related career and recognized that although she needed to leave the medical treatment to the pros, it was important to keep the man calm and conscious. She asked if she could get him anything, and he asked, "You have a pillow?" Ironically, she did. After retrieving it from the car, she tried to make the man as comfortable as possible by talking with him about four-wheeling.

A short while later the police and rescue arrived; and when they started treating the injured man, she had to smile. One of the rescue men saw her pink pillow and exclaimed, "Where in the world did this come from?"

Later, when the man was safely in the hospital, his wife told Katie that she had indeed saved her husband's life. The four-wheeler, she said, rolled on her husband in such a way that it severed an artery in his leg. He would have bled to death were it not for Katie's help and calmness in an emergency.
